They get those messages, regardless. It is more important to me that my daughters know they are smart, beautiful, worthy, etc no matter what a company or person says to the contrary. They already know they don’t need to look a certain way, be a certain way, have certain things or not have certain things to be worthy. I will make sure they continue to understand that. We don’t need to bad mouth this fool or see these reactions to his hateful comments go viral. I am raising my daughters to be outraged about things like Gitmo and civil rights being trampled. I don’t want them to give a fuck about what someone thinks or says about their looks. Good or bad.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s quite that simple. Young girls are so impressionable – they don’t have the benefit of our life experience and ability to dismiss this brand as we might. Quite frankly, as I did, prior to reading the CEO’s horrific remarks. It’s offensive and unfortunate and like it or not, our daughters and sons will get those messages that unless you are thin, sexy, ripped and in name brands, you aren’t cool. That your self- worth is only on the surface.

It amazes me how different motherhood is from what I was envisioning. I had friends who had kids and were pretty honest about the gig. I guess it’s one of those things that you can never truly understand until you experience it for yourself. Thanks for the encouragement.

I often have these exact thoughts about myself. It definitely wasn’t what I pictured or signed up for when I decided to become a mom. I really thought I could be perfect at it; but I am impatient and tell a lot! I’m also very sarcastic and demeaning and I hate that about myself.

So, you’re not alone. They will appreciate is when they have their own kids I guess.
