I have to confess something and get it off my chest: I hate the upstairs of my house. Not because it isn’t well designed or anything like that, but because it is basically the domain of the kids and it’s a mess.

Their bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs, as well as the laundry room (that I rarely use because I have a stacked washer/dryer in my bathroom) and the guest room. I don’t use the laundry room, but the kids play in there and leave toys and clothes in the floor.

Here’s the scene: Zeta’s room is being painted and she is getting new (to her) furniture. Everything has been pulled out of her room and the room has been prepped for painting.

All of the furniture that was in her room has been crammed into the guest room. I can’t even open the door all the way, there is so much stuff in there.

Zeta has been sleeping with her sisters in their room. Which is a huge mess. Toys and clothes, books and games strewn everywhere.  The beds aren’t made, clothes are hanging out of open drawers – you get the idea.

Then there is the bathroom. I don’t know how, but these girls manage to get gobs of tooth paste everywhere. Not just in the sink and on the towels, which is bad enough, but on the counters, the floor, the door jamb and even the carpet just outside the bathroom. How is this possible? It would appear they aren’t capable of getting things into the trash can because several teeth flossers and q-tips surround the trashcan.

And me? I’m just in denial about the whole thing. I rarely go up there and if I do, I close the doors so I don’t have to look at it. Sure, I make them clean up their room and the bathroom, but by the next day it’s in the same state of disarray. It feels like a lost cause.

But this week? I’m finally over it. I’m going to insist they clean up and keep it clean. I’m going to get them out of the way this weekend so Big Daddy can start painting Zeta’s room and then I’m going to get rid of some of that furniture that is shoved in the guest room. Enough is enough.
