I did it. I cut the cord on cable. I can’t believe it. Me. The TV addict.

I’ve been talking about cancelling cable for at least a year. Maybe two. But I was too afraid. I love TV, you guys. LOVE IT.  But then I started cutting some shows out of my line-up and began realizing how much you can watch online the day after it airs on television.

I also started realizing that I might watch just a tad too much television.  That I could perhaps benefit from less Andy Cohen and more reading or hey! Writing! Like I really want to do. Or maybe, I don’t know, something crazy like clean and organize the house or even do a little exercise! Wha?? Let’s not get crazy. Let’s just start with less TV.

Also? My freaking cable bill was $190/month! We had the phone/cable/internet bundle. But still. It was supposed to be $140 or something like that, it’s been so long since I signed up I can’t remember. But they charge you for HD/DVR boxes and remotes. Taxes and fees and before you know it, you’ve spent way too much on bullshit.

So now we have Netflix and Hulu and the combined monthly total for that is $14.  And so far no one seems to mind. Big Daddy and I are watching Breaking Bad. How we didn’t watch this before is beyond me. And we’ve got a list of other shows we apparently should have been watching for years.

The girls are happy with their Netflix selections and DVDS. Plus, the whole point (besides the money saving angle) is to watch less television. So if they aren’t happy with their viewing choices, they can always read a book. Or play a game. Or go outside and play in the street.

I’ll admit, I’m a little freaked out. Two of my favorite shows have season premieres in a couple weeks. Walking Dead and American Horror Story. But, I’ve been assured I will be able to watch these shows a day or two after they air.

I mean, I’ve got to know if Lori’s going to survive a zombie attack while waddling around. And is she going to quit being such a bitch to her husband? And is anyone going to keep an eye on the kid this season or are they just going to let him roam free when there are a shit-ton of zombie’s on the loose? And what about this new character and her armless zombie slaves? I gotta know!

And I can’t wait for the 2nd season of American Horror Story! Asylum! Yes. Who among us isn’t afraid of being locked up in some crazy asylum? (No? Just me?)  I just love Jessica Lange in this show and look at that picture? Have you ever seen a scarier looking nun before?

So tell me, have you given up cable?

I am inspired! I am so close to doing the same thing and my husband would be soooooo happy if I did. You are right. It is way too expensive and there is so much more to do with our time. I prefer to watch TV on my laptop in bed!

I have given up all my cable bu 90% of it. I kept the kids package for the kids but it is pretty limited so we supplement with netflix. My bill is 85 a month now for internet/cable would like to go cold turkey but the kids like to watch a show of two, but at least they are limited to only 6 channels. Maybe we’ll quit for the new year!

I’m with you, Trish… too much money out the door for something we just don’t need so much of. It it weren’t for the sports my hubby watches (and my addiction to HGTV), we could do away with cable, too. I like watching the shows on the computer because it takes LESS of my time to do so! (the commercials are shorter)
Anyway, good for you! You’ve made an excellent choice!

Yep, we gave it up as you know and no complaints, and you know what else???? No kids saying “i want that!” :) Cons are I dont know what they want for bday or Christmas, but happy to not hear the constant I wants! :) We have hulu plus too which has lots of good network shows on it and movies. There is always Amazon to buy movies from too if need be. Scott also built an antenna to receive the digital signals so we have regular network shows plus a few for free. Cant pause or rewind so I have to be ready to watch now, but sort of like the commercials now for a chance to run for a refill :) Enjoy!

Do it, Tiff! Quit! I’m telling you almost everything they want to see can be seen on Netflix and/or Hulu. Also, you can watch most of the network shows on those networks websites the day after they air.

Tam & Chris, thanks for the encouragement! We’re already adjusting well. Kids are watching less TV and not complaining. And, Chris, I’m so sick of the kids watching commercials and saying they want everything, too!

    Maria, cut the cord! :-)

  8. Oooh, I’d LOVE to cut that cord (and BILL)! Did you have to buy boxes for each tv? I watch hardly anything, so I’d get rid of cable in a heartbeat, but the hubby has a few things that he would have a meltdown without–NASCAR, Gators football, and Euro soccer. I hate that we pay nearly $200/mo for that crap. Good for you!

My family cut the cord over a year ago and we save 1200/year AND we don’t miss it. There is a free site called CableCutterGuys that helped us through the techy stuff. I recommend it.

It’s been great so far! We haven’t missed it and it’s so nice not to constantly have the TV going in the background.
