Summer is drawing to an end. And while I am looking forward to having a little more time to myself during the day, it’s been a really good summer and I might actually miss these girls a wee bit.

But I’m excited for what lies (lays? Grammar is not my strong suit) (What’s that you say? You hadn’t noticed? Smart ass) ahead.  You know I am writing for our brand new, very fancy local magazine, Bainbridge Island Magazine. Well, in addition to free-lancing for the magazine, this summer I became the Social Media Maven/Community Manager for said fantastic publication. Because who better, right?!

(Go ahead and “like” us on Facebook and follow on Twitter and Pinterest. You know you want to)

Well, our very own Field’s End has asked me to speak at one of their monthly Roundtables next fall (yes, you read that right. Over a year from now. Just enough time to prepare), on social media. I’m super excited and a little bit freaked out. Believe it or not, I’m not 100% comfortable with public speaking. But I’m going to use the next 14 months to get over that fear.

Last spring I was asked to be on the steering committee for Mom’s Morning Retreat as the Hospitality Coordinator. The group meets twice a month from September – June, so I will begin my hospitality gig next month.  Part of my duties is leading an ice-breaker at each meeting. So that means I’ll be standing up in front of the group and speaking to them. And because the group meets at 9:30am, I’ll be (relatively) sober.

I figure this will be a good way to get comfortable speaking in public. Also? Field’s End is going to host an open mic night for its December roundtable so writers can read their work. I plan to read something.

You know what I’d really love to read? An excerpt from my book! So one of my goals this school year is to write said book while the girls are in school! I certainly don’t have to finish it, but I’d like to get past the introduction (where it’s been languishing for a couple years).

And I’m going to sign up for yoga again and possibly Zumba. Does anyone have any experience with Zumba? I’m a complete uncoordinated jackass and am afraid I will look like a total spaz and possibly be asked to leave. Any tips?

What are you looking forward to doing once your kids are (outta your hair) back in school?

First off, congrats on all the “Please do this for us because you are fabulous” gigs! You have a full calendar booked for you. Zumba is fun and you’ll look around and think “Thank god I don’t look the worse”..sure someone is probably looking at you and saying the same thing. But that is what balances out the world! Have fun and good job!

Thank you, Adriana! I don’t really care what I look like – that’s one of the great things about getting older. You just don’t give a shit. My concern is that I just won’t be able to do it and I won’t get a good workout. Or I’ll be too frustrated to continue. But, from what I’m learning about Zumba, I think I’ll be all right.

Congrats on all the great gigs and the girls going back to school. Zumba is fun. It really depends on the teacher. There’s a Zumba class I take where the instructor does not cue any steps. She justs moves and we follow. Also, some teachers have more intricate moves than others. Just jump in and find one you like.

Thanks Deneen! I’m pretty excited about my new gigs. It’s kind of cool how this writing life is coming together organically. I am going to just go for it with Zumba. Screw it!
