It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To
In our family, you don’t get a birthday party until you turn 4. (Because the parents are too cheap and anxiety-ridden to plan a party, so we put it off as long as possible).
So that means that this year Jemima is having her very first birthday party!! Yay!!! She is SO excited about this party, you guys. She has literally been talking about it since her last birthday. (She was so disappointed to see that the cake I made her was not a Dora cake and that there was no bounce house. Or friends).
So this year I have invited her friends from preschool, her bestie across the street and another little girl in our neighborhood. I have ordered the Dora cake and the bounce house.
And no one is coming.
I shit you not. There will be us. And her bestie from across the street.
You guys! How sad is that? Now, OK. We have almost two weeks until the big day. But I fear, like the 6 who have RSVP’d “no”, the 9 who haven’t replied yet will be out of town or at camp or with visiting family. Because August is a really tricky month to have a party.
I’m feeling so sad for my girl. I really hope there is more than one guest at her first ever birthday party.

August is a terrible month for birthday parties. I kid you not. I have 2 born in August and, every year, it is torture to pull something together. I’ve given up on RSVP’s. We had 10 kids RSVP for a trip to Gameworks (teenagers) only to have 8 of them cancel THE NIGHT BEFORE after we had already paid $200. Luckily, Gameworks gave us half of our money back – but in game cards. I am sorry for Gemma. It sucks. I suggest making a big thing about her half birthday in February… with half cake and stuff and then do a small thing on her real birthday.
Zeta has the same birthday as Jemima. She’s been a little more furtunate in your turn out, but not by much. She’s used to this summer birthday thing and isn’t too disappointed. Their half birthday is Valentine’s Day. That might actually be a fun idea. Gameworks is so fun! There is talk of the family going on their actual bday to celebrate. We shall see.
Oooohhhh, so sorry. But even if it’s only a few people she’ll still be so happy. I think it’s summer bdays. We’re having a similar issue with my youngest and her bday right now too.

If a few show up I’ll be thrilled. I’m afraid it’s just going to be one. It is the timing – Zeta has the same bday. But this is Jemima’s first go-round so I feel bad for the kid. Who knows? Maybe a few people will RSVP “yes” in the next few days or Jemima won’t give a shit if there is one friend and two sissies.
Aww… yes, summer birthdays suck (I should know) but here’s hoping these dumbasses didn’t have enough class to actually rsvp and a few more will actually show. Be prepared.

God, Rachel, I hope so! The poor girl was crying this morning saying, “Only one person is coming to my party.”
I’m going to have to get creative about who else I can invite!
Best wishes. I hope everyone who hasn’t replied yet will come and she has a fabulous day.

AWWW! I’m an August baby too (8/13) and when I was growing up my birthday was always during the last week before school started and NO ONE ever came to my parties… and then when I was 9 my mom suggested we have a year-and-a-month party and we started celebrating on 9/13. Whaddya know? People showed up.

That has happened to us before. To make matters worse, my poor little boy had no friends show up and his grandparents (the in-laws) and two aunts were over an hour late. I was early in my last pregnancy and no one even knew yet and I was so ticked I wouldn’t speak to my in-laws for the entire time they were there. My son, however, said he had a great time playing on the playground despite the fact. Your little girl will probably be the same way and be so overjoyed with the Dora cake and bounce house she may not even notice.
New follower from the blog hop. Hope you will stop by and see me.

It is so hard to see your baby be disappointed and cry. I hope other folks will end up coming. I know you and your family will do their best to make this a perfect birthday and I bet she will think it was wonderful. Hope it all works out. Found your site from SITS Sat. Sharefest.
Misty, thanks! It went well. There were 4 of her little friends here and she was thrilled.
Hey, Cynthia. Thanks for stopping by. It all worked out well, thank goodness. It’s so hard not to worry about your kids and their happiness. Especially when it’s entirely out of your control.
Birthdays are always complicated
Yes, and I do not like party-planning! Not my strong suit.
