For PrompTuesday this week, Deb posits the question:

What one thing can’t you give up?

Oh this is hard. There are so many things! How can I pick one? Books, television, cable television (is that a separate thing? I’m thinking it is because if someone threatened to take my TV and then said I’ll just take the cable channels that would certainly be two different things to me), Internet, moisturizer, lip gloss, tweezers, my family, friends.  Hmm.  I’m taking my family and friends off the table right off the bat. The question is what thing can’t you live without. People aren’t things.

Back in November we lost power for 3 days. No electricity. (duh). No TV, cable or otherwise, no Internet connection. But you know what? It really wasn’t that bad. We played board games, card games and did puzzles and crafts with the kids. We played these games and ate our dinners by candle lights. We all read a lot more than we usually do and read more to each other and in the same room. But really? What got me through those three days without power? My smart phone.

Thanks to my iPhone (and the small generator that allowed me to charge the iPhone) I was able to send and receive emails, check my favorite blogs, update my facebook status, and talk to friends and family near and far. Plus? You can watch Netflix on that thing and read a book! Play games and use it as a flashlight (there’s an app for that). So, while I was able to unplug and relax. Spend some real quality time with my family and books, it was nice to have the Internet connection to see what was doing in the outside world.  Tweezers are a close second, though.
