Book! Book! Book!
Every reader loves a good book for the summer, right? I think so. So I am going to share a few of my recent reads that I really enjoyed. I know we Mamas are always on a budget and don’t always have cash in the kitty for books. So what is a bargain-loving Mama to do? Go to the library of course! As much as I love books I don’t own that many. And I love the library! So giddy walking out with an armful of hardbacks that cost me nothing! Also? If I didn’t love the book I don’t feel like I wasted my money. If your branch doesn’t have the book you want, they will have it delivered from another branch for you. Easy peasy! Ok, there’s my library spiel. On to the book selections.
The Heights . This is new fiction by Peter Hedges, the author of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. The book is about a young couple with two small children living in the upwardly mobile neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights (same place the fictional Huxtables lived, to give you an idea of the area). A family moves into the neighborhood and messes with the main characters heads and lives.
Undress Me in the Temple Heavenis a memoir by Susan Jane Gilman. It is the story of her post college graduation fateful trip around the world with a girl it turned out she didn’t know as well as she thought she did. You will be captivated by their story.
Unfinished Desiresis a novel by Gail Godwin about a group of Catholic School Girls and the nuns who taught them. The book goes back and forth between the 1950′s when they were in school together and 2001 when Mother Ravenel is writing her memoir about the school and her many years spent there. Both as a student and a teacher. It is a poignant story of jealousy and forgiveness. It is also about young women figuring out who they are and what they want from life.
The Goon Squad is a novel by Jennifer Egan. The story is at on e complex and easy to follow. It centers on kleptomaniac Sasha and her record producer boss Bennie as well as his former bandmate Scotty. The book is set in present day(ish) New York City as well as the early days of punk rock in San Francisco. Riveting and interesting it is a book you will read quickly and think about for a long time after.
Happy reading! Oh, and the title of this blog is also the title of a children’s book for toddlers and preschoolers by Debroah Bruss.
