All the kids are sick at our house. There’s a lot of coughing, sniffling and sneezing going on. Aside from these noises there are a lot of Felix Unger-type noises coming out of them. All this hacking and gurgling and I don’t even know how to describe it. The thing is, they’re all actually at the end of these colds, but the noises are getting worse. I know they aren’t contagious (so if some of you reading happen to have children who go to school with them, fear not) because the doctor gave them the all clear. But it just breaks my heart to hear them coughing through the night.

And the baby. Oh my sweet baby! She has this nose that will not stop running. And we all know how much little ones love to have their noses wiped, right? So she turns her head and cries and I end up wiping snot across her cheek and into her eyebrow. Then I have to scrub at that with a wipe and she really loses her shit. My sweet baby starts howling and batting her arms at my head like I’m a fly she’s trying to get rid of. And to hear her coughing in her sleep just kills me. But the worst part is there is nothing I can do for her except let her ride it out. You can’t give children under 2 cough medicine (unless they need a prescription and thankfully, she does not) or cold medicine. So nothing to dry up her snot and nothing to soothe her coughing.

However, she is getting better. The runny nose has gone from a constant stream of green snot to an intermittent dripping of clear snot. She rubs her nose a lot, but isn’t sneezing much and the coughing has definitely diminished. I’m hoping in the next few days everyone will be symptom free. But until then it’s all a little heart breaking and I gotta admit, irritating. Who wants to listen to Felix Unger honking and hacking?

The doctor always told me to give X benadryl to dry up the snot when he slept. Stay strong Trish. I can’t imagine having 3, the 2 boys that I have now are enough.

Thanks, Nay. I can’t give the 18 month old anything except Motrin or Tylenol and those won’t really help. None of them have a fever. I’ve been able to give the big girls meds to dry up their noses and ease their coughing. It just drives me nuts how long these colds linger.

Feel better soon, Bittman Babes :(

Trish- I find that a nice, thick, down filled pillow works wonders. You barely hear them coughing.
